Neil Brockdorff elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society
Prof Neil Brockdorff
Neil’s work is concerned with understanding gene regulation in mammalian development. Through most of his career he has focused on elucidating the molecular mechanism of X chromosome inactivation, the process that evolved in mammals to equalise the level of gene expression in XX females relative to XY males. In seminal work in the early 1990s he was the first to define the non-coding RNA Xist, as the master regulator of the X inactivation process. Subsequent and ongoing studies have been directed towards understanding how Xist RNA triggers chromosome silencing.
Neil joined the Department of Biochemistry in 2008 and is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow.
