To commemorate Associate Professor Stephan Uphoff's award for the sought-after 2020 Lister Institute Research Prize, the Department of Biochemistry hosted an award ceremony on Wednesday 23rd March 2022. The celebration was attended by representatives from the Lister Institute, Professor Sir Alex Markham (Chairman) and Dr. Sally Burtles (Director), members of the Department of Biochemistry and other University Departments. Although the Lister Institute Research Prize was awarded to Stephan in 2020, the pandemic meant we were unable to host an in-person award ceremony until this year.

Every year the Lister Institute awards a handful of research prizes to outstanding early-career biomedical scientists. In 2020, out of 114 applications, 4 winners were chosen after evaluations and interviews via Zoom.
Associate Professor Stephan Uphoff was recognised for his highly innovative research programme in DNA repair. His laboratory develops tools to visualise DNA repair proteins at a single-molecule level and to detect mutation events within living bacterial cells.
